MISCELLANEOUS THINGS I HAVE COME ACROSS...

ZEPPELIN IN AN ART-DECO STYLE AD

I found this in a brochure from a company that offered art degrees that you could get from home. The brochure was from the 1940's or 1950's. This image was used as an example of the modern advertisements you would learn to do. The steel company in the ad actually existed, although I have never seen this ad in print. ONLY KNOWN PHOTO TAKEN FROM A ZEPPELIN IN WWI WHILE UNDER ATTACK

This photo is a rarity - it is the only known photo of planes attacking a zeppelin during WWI. This photo was probably taken from the command car suspended under the zeppelin. Imagine setting up a tripod camera in the cramped control gondola and snapping this shot while being fired upon. Zeppelins in WWI had no on-board defenses against aerial attack, and a single incendiary bullet from one of the fighters would likely cause an explosion in the hydrogen bags, resulting in a firey crash. There are 3 or maybe 4 fighters in the photo, the most recognizable is in the upper right, just under the body of the zeppelin. One fighter appears to have exploded. It is surprising that the fighters appear to be single wing, and not biplanes. The flat, wing-like control surfaces for the zeppelin were common for the time, and are somewhat analogous to the 'flaps' on modern airplanes. This photo is remarkable considering the conditions it was taken under. (picture from - )
