The Movable Book Society

The main 'professional society' concerning the pop-up book world is The Movable Book Society. Membership in MBS is comprised mostly of book collectors, pop-up book authors, and people in the pop-up book industry (publishers, printers, etc).

The MBS has a conference every two years (the 2023 one was in Cleveland), with conferences alternating between cities in the eastern and western United States (ever since Covid it has become a hybrid online/in-person event). Each conference starts Thursday evening and continues through Saturday, and includes a field trip to a local place of interest (a museum, a publishing house, a research library, a store that specializes in rare pop-up books, etc). The conferences generally draw about a hundred people, and feature speakers, a banquet and a pop-up book auction (often featuring rare pop-up books for sale). Members vote on the new recipients of The Meggendorfer Prizes, given to the best pop-up books and the best paper engineers of the year.

The MBS publishes (online) a quarterly newsletter titled Movable Stationery that is very informative, and includes current membership info and conference news. The webpage has been recently reworked, and features links to previous editions of Movable Stationery. Check it out!
